Platteville's Eighth Annual Historic Encampment
Platteville's Eighth Annual Historic Encampment was held September 9-11, 2005,
in Moundview Park with free admission. Sponsored by the Platteville Area
Chamber of Commerce, this event coincided with Platteville's "Dairy Days" festival. The Platteville Historic Encampment prides itself on offering a quality
educational experience to Tri-State area schools and communities. All
who attended enjoyed
presentations on Woodland Indian life ways, authentic Ojibwa legends, and the
lives of explorers, merchants, fur trappers and traders, and the clothing of
the time. Platteville's mining and Rollo Jamison Museums were on hand to present
exhibits about early lead mining in Southwest Wisconsin, and provided an opportunity
to participate in 19th Century children's and parlor games. Many fine artisans
and craftspeople provided demonstrations on this period of dyeing and weaving
of textiles, metalworking, woodworking, candle making and field gunsmithing.
A wide variety of period music was shared throughout the weekend, and as you
can see from this photo gallery how uniquely fun and interesting history can be! Any one interested in helping to grow this event for
even more school children to experience should contact the Platteville Encampment.
